What is it that comes to mind when you think about December? Is it the sound of joyful Christmas carolers or joining the family on their annual hunt for the perfect Christmas tree? Most high school and college students would beg to differ. They almost always find themselves cringing at the thought or even mere mention of the month of December, for they know what this ever impending time of the year has in store for them. Hours of back bending, last minute studying and stressing are usually at the top of the list of the most common symptoms of a student who is about to embark on a series of terrifying journeys that are part of the dreaded finals week.
But how do you avoid all of the last minute studying and stressing? It’s easy.
The first major step is time management. That means NO PROCRASTINATION! Trust me…I know how difficult it can be to resist the temptation of a nice thirty minute pizza break or telling yourself that you’ll only read one more chapter or watch one more episode. Sadly, you and I both know that taking those “short breaks” can much more likely lead to distracting us away from a successful study session. So start with setting a schedule for yourself. Maybe do and hour for studying for one subject and then take a ten minute break to eat a light brain powering snack and then continue the process for the next 2 hours.
Staying focused and truly understanding what it is that you are reading is also very vital to the whole studying process. Keep yourself stimulated, do little tricks to make sure that you head is really in the game. Test yourself every other chapter on what you read or post sticky notes or highlight those things that stand out to you or that you find you will be tested on.
And last but not least, put work into it! I can tell you now that reading this whole article will be a complete waste of time if you do not have the initiative to put forth effort into getting your desired grade on that final. So with that said I hope you will take into consideration your study habits and see how you can better improve yourself to help avoid the finals week blues so that you can truly enjoy all that comes along with the wonderful month of December!
